A workshop was held in Matadi, in the Kongo-Central province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on October 20. The event, organized by the New Congolese Civil Society, focused on youth leadership and participation in decision-making instances. Around 30 young people from various structures and civil society actors attended the meeting. The goal was to gather youth concerns and strengthen advocacy for more active participation in public life and community decision-making.

The initiative aims to better consider young people's aspirations and promote their involvement in decision-making processes. According to Jonas Tshiombela, coordinator of the New Congolese Civil Society, this is a necessary step. The Provincial Youth Council also sees this as an opportunity to voice the concerns of young people in Kongo-Central. The council's president, Symplus Lukau Thomas, emphasized the importance of youth participation in provincial development.

Participants stressed the responsibility of young people in transforming society. Shadrac Mambeya, an activist from the citizen movement Lutte pour le changement (LUCHA), highlighted the value of such meetings in encouraging youth engagement. Merveille Makaya, an agent at the Provincial Tourism Division, called on young people to be aware of their role and demonstrate leadership within their communities.

Arianne Nkuanga, a lawyer and member of several civil society structures, believes that this type of initiative helps raise youth awareness about their responsibilities in societal development. The workshop provided a platform for young people to express their concerns and aspirations. It also brought together civil society actors who can support youth participation in decision-making.

The workshop was an opportunity for young people to network and share experiences. Participants discussed ways to increase youth involvement in public life and decision-making. They also explored strategies for strengthening advocacy and promoting youth leadership.

Despite the enthusiasm and commitment expressed during the workshop, a key question remains: how to translate this willingness into effective youth participation in decision-making instances? The answer will depend on the actions taken by young people, civil society, and government institutions.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting youth participation in decision-making. The New Congolese Civil Society and other organizations present pledged to continue supporting young people in their efforts to take on a more active role in shaping their communities.
