Dr. Kelvin Gidisu, a urologist at the Sunyani-based Bosomtwi Urology Hospital, has expressed concern about the growing cases of prostate cancer in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of early detection and management of the condition, advising the public to screen for prostate cancer frequently. According to Dr. Gidisu, seeing a specialist on time, drinking water frequently, and avoiding keeping urine for long hours are vital in preventing prostate cancer.
Dr. Gidisu made these remarks during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, on the sidelines of the fifth edition of the "Sompa Health Clinic", a health outreach organized by the Sunyani-based Sompa FM. The health outreach, which was attended by over 800 people, including the aged, students, and children, provided free health screening services, including high blood pressure, diabetes, body mass index, dental, and eye services.
The health outreach also provided specialized services, including gynecological, eye, dental, and prostate cancer screening, as well as treatment for throat, ear, and nose conditions. Some beneficiaries who had serious conditions were referred to health facilities for further treatment, while others were provided with free drugs to manage their conditions. Dr. Gidisu indicated that knowing one's health condition is paramount to preventing and fighting chronic diseases.
The Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, commended the management of Sompa FM for organizing the health outreach, which he said would complement the government's efforts in achieving the objective of the Primary Healthcare Programme (PHC). The PHC program allows citizens to access basic health services free of charge at any public health facility.
Mr. Yaw Aboagye Boadi, the General Manager of Sompa FM, explained that the health outreach is an annual event, usually held in September, and forms part of the station's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to give back to society. The event aims to provide free health services to the public and promote health awareness.
Dr. Gidisu's call for frequent medical checkups comes amid a growing concern about the increasing cases of prostate cancer in Ghana. Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Ghana, and early detection is crucial for effective management and treatment.
The Ghana Health Service has also emphasized the importance of regular health checkups, particularly for men, to detect prostate cancer early. The service has encouraged the public to prioritize their health and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms or have concerns about their health.
