The Tunisian Ministry of Environment announced that construction and rehabilitation efforts are underway for six wastewater treatment plants in the Oued Miliane basin. This region spans across the governorates of Ben Arous, Zaghouan, and Siliana. The projects aim to mitigate pollution in the area. As part of the pollution reduction efforts, the National Environmental Protection Agency (ANPE) conducted control operations at 10 industrial facilities near the Oued Miliane. These operations identified infractions and led to the development of an action plan with facility managers. The plan focuses on ensuring environmental compliance and rehabilitating or installing wastewater treatment plants at these sites.
The ministry provided updates on major sanitation projects in progress or already completed. The Sud Miliane 2 wastewater treatment plant, with a capacity of 90,000 cubic meters per day, has reached 60% completion. Additionally, the rehabilitation of the integrated industrial wastewater treatment plant in Sud Miliane is 70% complete.
Other projects are also underway. The El Fahs wastewater treatment plant construction is 85% complete, while the Bir Mcherga plant is at 55%. The construction of the Jebel Oust wastewater treatment plant has started, with a planned capacity of 1,750 cubic meters per day. This plant will serve local communities.
The ministry also announced that the Khalidia wastewater treatment plant has begun operations, with a capacity of 2,400 cubic meters per day. Furthermore, the Attar wastewater treatment plant is part of a project to valorize wastewater in several governorates, including Tunis, Ben Arous, Zaghouan, Sousse, and Sfax.
The Oued Miliane basin faces significant environmental challenges due to pollution from industrial and domestic activities.
