Nigerian politician Omoyele Sowore has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his 2027 presidential campaign. Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, arrived back in Nigeria on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after more than 20 months away. He expressed excitement over his return to his family and country. Sowore had traveled to the US due to what he described as harassment by Nigerian security agencies.
During his time in the US, Sowore engaged with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists, and other stakeholders on the state of the country and his political agenda. He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad. Sowore emphasized his commitment to the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora in the country’s democratic process.
Sowore's return marks another phase of his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He plans to engage with various groups, including workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals, and communities across the country. These engagements will focus on the political, social, and economic issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 agenda.
The AAC presidential candidate said his campaign would seek to mobilize Nigerians around issues including equal rights, justice, peace, security, and economic development. He emphasized that the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to decide on the direction of the country’s political leadership. Sowore's campaign will continue to advocate for fundamental political, social, and economic transformation.
Sowore also disclosed that he would continue to attend court proceedings in connection with the cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services in 2025. He remains committed to taking his message directly to Nigerians across the country. His campaign will continue to engage with Nigerians as the 2027 election approaches.
An AAC administration, if elected president in 2027, would pursue the implementation of diaspora voting, according to Sowore. He emphasized his commitment to this course, highlighting the importance of Nigerians in the diaspora in the country’s democratic process.
Sowore is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, before proceeding to Abuja. His return and continued campaign efforts signify a significant development in Nigeria's preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
