Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, has expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Obi raised the issue on Sunday in a post on his social media handle. He made the statement after watching an address by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at the global gathering.
Obi’s statement, released through his media office spokesman, Idris Zekeri, questioned why Tinubu was not present at the UNGA. The former Anambra State governor emphasized that Nigeria, as the most populous nation in Africa, should have its President represented at major international events. He compared Tinubu’s absence with Mahama’s participation at the gathering, citing the country’s population and position in Africa.
Obi also questioned Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA over the past three editions. He stressed that Nigeria needed presidential representation amid several domestic and international challenges. Although Vice President Kashim Shettima was present, Obi said Nigerians are still asking where their President is, especially at a time when the country faces serious challenges.
The Presidency had announced on September 21 that Tinubu had extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days. It stated that the President was expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend. Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London before travelling to Paris, France, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu remained in contact with government officials at home and continued to direct the affairs of the country while abroad. Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at the 81st UNGA, leading Nigeria’s delegation to the gathering and delivering Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday.
Obi called for continued prayers for Tinubu’s return and effective leadership. He expressed hope that a New Nigeria is possible and will be achieved. The statement comes amid concerns over Tinubu’s health and whereabouts, with some Nigerians questioning his ability to lead the country effectively.
The development has sparked a mixed reaction, with some Nigerians supporting Obi’s concerns and others defending Tinubu’s decision to extend his vacation.
