On October 30, 2026, the Mauritanian Ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development, and Agriculture and Food Sovereignty signed a cooperation agreement in Nouakchott. The agreement, within the framework of the "Ambdera" project, aims to support farmers in the Wadan municipality, protect agricultural lowlands, and promote local productive activities. This will contribute to improving living conditions for residents and valorizing natural resources.
The agreement was signed by the two ministries' secretaries general, Moulay Ibrahim Ould Moulay Idriss and Ahmed Salem Ould Arab, respectively. The agreement is part of the "Ambdera" project, which aims to establish a system for managing the protected area of Kelb ar-Richat. This approach combines natural resource protection with improving local residents' livelihoods.
The initiative responds to demands expressed by Wadan residents and farmers during President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani's visit to the city on September 21, 2026. Specifically, they requested protection for agricultural lowlands and support for their exploitation after recent rains filled some lowlands, reviving hopes for resuming agricultural activities in the area.
The agreement aligns with President Ghazouani's program "Tmoohi for the Nation," which aims to improve living conditions, enhance food security, and support productive activities in rural and oasis areas. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty emphasized the need to accelerate implementation to protect cultivated areas and support small farmers.
Wadan Mayor, Mohamed Amin Ould Bab, highlighted three essential needs to protect agricultural lowlands: providing an additional 14 kilometers of metal fencing, covering the costs of ten guards for four months, and supplying ten flexible water tanks for drinking water for agricultural workers. These demands arise as farmers exploit agricultural lowlands, known locally as "Lakrayer," after being filled with rainwater.
The mayor noted that farmers face challenges, including the risk of stray animals and the need to secure crops and provide drinking water. The agreement was signed in the presence of several officials and staff from both ministries. The partnership aims to address these challenges and support local farmers.
The agreement is expected to improve the living conditions of Wadan residents and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Key aspects of the agreement include supporting farmers, protecting agricultural lowlands, and enhancing local productive activities.
