The 17 Local Government Area chairmen in Enugu State have expressed their support for Governor Peter Mbah's development agenda, praising his administration's achievements in various sectors. According to Honourable Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, the governor's mid-term performance update demonstrates a commitment to transforming Enugu State through innovation and strategic investments. The chairmen described the administration's progress in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic growth as significant milestones.
The chairmen highlighted several key initiatives, including the construction of 268 Smart Green Schools and 260 Type Two Primary Healthcare Centres across the state's wards. These projects aim to strengthen education and healthcare delivery, with the healthcare centres expected to improve access to medical services. The recruitment of 2,250 health personnel will support round-the-clock operations at primary healthcare facilities, addressing a critical need in the state's healthcare sector.
The establishment of advanced diagnostic services, including MRI, CT scans, and mammography, is also expected to reduce medical tourism and position Enugu as a destination for specialised healthcare. This move is part of a broader effort to improve healthcare infrastructure and services in the state. By investing in healthcare, the administration aims to enhance the quality of life for Enugu's residents.
On economic development, Ukwueze cited the revitalisation of United Palm Products Limited and the return of Sunrise Flour Mills to full operation through a public-private partnership. The state is also investing in aviation, agriculture, energy, and animal husbandry, initiatives expected to create jobs and boost the state's economy. These projects have the potential to drive economic growth and stimulate development in Enugu.
The chairmen also highlighted ongoing tourism projects, including the development of the Nsude Pyramid, Ovu Lake Resort, Akpofu lakeside development, and Akwuke Beach Resort. These initiatives aim to strengthen the state's tourism potential and attract investments, providing new opportunities for economic growth. By developing its tourism sector, Enugu can diversify its economy and create new revenue streams.
Addressing concerns over taxation, Ukwueze urged residents to disregard misleading narratives about the introduction of new taxes. The government is harmonising statutory charges and implementing reforms to address multiple taxation, with small businesses set to benefit from measures designed to simplify tax administration. The state government has pledged to publish the harmonised charges for public scrutiny, ensuring transparency in the process.
The chairman noted that the state government's internally generated revenue has increased from N25 billion to N400 billion, describing it as evidence of improved revenue mobilisation. He called on residents to sustain their support for the governor's development programmes, stressing that collective responsibility is required for the success of the administration's agenda. The 17 council chairmen have adopted the governor's manifesto as a shared social contract, with measurable performance indicators to guide implementation at the grassroots.
