Lions International District 404B6 Nigeria, in collaboration with various Lions Clubs, recently conducted a childhood cancer awareness campaign at Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital in Lagos State. The event, which took place on September 16, 2026, aimed to educate nursing mothers, patients, and the general public about childhood cancer and the importance of early detection. The campaign was part of Lions International's commitment to supporting children and families affected by cancer.
The District Governor of Lions International District 404B6 Nigeria, Lion Oluomo Sunday Akere, emphasized the significance of public awareness in the fight against childhood cancer. He noted that September is observed as a month dedicated to childhood cancer awareness, providing an opportunity to raise awareness and mobilize support for children living with cancer. Akere highlighted that despite the prevalence of cancer globally, many people are unaware that children can also develop the disease.
Dr. Opeyemi Jenyo, a consultant pediatrician, educated participants on the various forms of childhood cancer and symptoms to watch out for. He explained that childhood cancers can affect different parts of the body, including the eyes, blood, brain, and other organs. Dr. Jenyo stressed that delayed recognition and presentation for medical care could have serious consequences, urging parents not to ignore unusual or persistent symptoms in their children.
Lion Omolola Olatunde, Chairperson of the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Programme, stated that the campaign aimed to replace fear and misinformation with awareness, early action, and hope. She emphasized that childhood cancer can be devastating, but early detection and prompt medical care can improve treatment outcomes. Olatunde encouraged parents and caregivers to be aware of the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer and seek medical attention if they notice anything unusual.
The awareness campaign was made possible through the cooperation and partnership of the management and medical team of Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital. Lion Olatunde expressed appreciation to the Medical Director and the entire team for their support. She also commended members of the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Committee for their dedication and commitment to the planning and execution of the programme.
Lion Olatunde called on members of the public to take the message of childhood cancer awareness beyond the hospital environment and become advocates for early detection in their communities.
