The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour weather forecast, warning of light to moderate rains in 13 counties across the country. The forecast, valid from 9 pm on Friday, September 25, to 9 pm on Saturday, September 26, indicates that isolated areas in Kakamega, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nyandarua counties are expected to experience rainfall. The department has cautioned that the rainfall will not be widespread but confined to scattered locations within these areas.
According to the forecast, Western and Rift Valley counties face the greatest chance of thunderstorm activity. Kakamega is specifically flagged for moderate showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, while Vihiga, Bungoma, Nandi, Kericho, and Trans Nzoia are also forecast to experience light showers and thunderstorms at various points during the day. The department has also warned that Nyandarua, in the central highlands, is expected to see light showers overnight alongside a forecast low of 10°C.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has also cautioned that strong winds exceeding 25 knots are anticipated over northern and coastal frontier counties. The affected counties include Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu counties. The strong winds are expected to raise the risk of blustery conditions in these areas.
Temperature extremes have also been forecast, with Turkana recording the highest forecast maximum temperature nationwide at 37°C. Mandera and Wajir are expected to experience high temperatures of 36°C and 35°C, respectively. Nairobi is expected to reach a daytime high of 28°C and dip to a low of 13°C, with partly cloudy skies overnight giving way to sunny intervals during the day.
Rainfall data for the 24 hours ending at 9 am on Friday showed Kisii station recording the highest total at just over 8mm. Kisumu and Kakamega each registered just under 4mm, Kericho recorded approximately 2.5mm, and Eldoret Airport received negligible rainfall during the same period. The department has urged residents to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the forecasted weather conditions.
The forecast was issued under the authority of Acting Director Edward Muriuki, with Orwa serving as the duty forecaster.
