Egyptian Minister of Housing, Randa El-Menashy, recently led a meeting of the Ministry's Utilities Committee to assess the current state of water and sanitation projects in Minya Governorate and the new city of Minya. The meeting was attended by Ahmed Emran, Deputy Minister of Housing for Utilities, and officials from the Ministry, the New Urban Communities Authority, and other relevant agencies.
El-Menashy emphasized that the water and sanitation sector is a top priority for the Egyptian government, as it is a fundamental component of sustainable urban development and improving citizen services. She stressed the importance of closely monitoring project progress, addressing any challenges, and ensuring timely completion to maximize the benefits of state investments in infrastructure development.
During the meeting, El-Menashy instructed officials to intensify on-site monitoring of ongoing water and sanitation projects in Upper Egypt governorates and new cities, with a focus on tracking individual project progress and addressing any issues promptly. This, she said, would help accelerate progress and achieve targets, particularly for projects that directly impact citizens' living standards and meet their needs.
The meeting reviewed a report on the findings of on-site monitoring visits to several water and sanitation projects in Minya Governorate, including the Minya wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 90,000 cubic meters per day, and the Deir El-Bersha water project with a capacity of 100 liters per second. Other projects covered included the El-Ghana Shajara water station and the Deir El-Aghras wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 6,000 cubic meters per day.
The meeting also examined the progress of water and sanitation projects in the new city of Minya, including the expansion of the main pumping station No. (1) and the transmission line from the pumping station to the treatment plant. Additionally, the design and implementation of the second phase of the wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 40,000 cubic meters per day using a triple treatment system were discussed.
Furthermore, the meeting reviewed the status of six utility network projects in the new city of Minya, which include water supply, sanitation, and road formation projects serving various areas of the city. These projects aim to provide services to the third tourist area (most distinguished lands) with an area of 150.67 acres and the 13th neighborhood in the fourth district of the 1360-acre area.
The meeting concluded with a review of the periodic report from the regulatory body for drinking water and sanitation, and consumer protection. The report covered the monitoring of the water and sanitation system in Minya Governorate and the new city of Minya, as well as the actions taken to address observed issues.
