The 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) took place in Enugu from September 23 to 26, 2026. Over 100 editors converged on the Coal City, not just for the formal conference, but also to unwind, reconnect, and rediscover the human side of their profession. The event was held at the Nike Lake Resort and other hotels, which became unofficial newsrooms where editors shared laughter, stories, and memories.
The conference formally opened on September 24 at the International Conference Centre (ICC), with discussions on elections, democracy, artificial intelligence, and professional responsibility. However, outside the conference halls, another story was unfolding. Editors from different generations mingled freely, sharing experiences and creating new memories. Pa Sam Amuka-Pemu, Vanguard publisher, and Segun Osoba, among others, interacted with younger colleagues, showcasing a convergence of generations.
The event provided a unique opportunity for editors to put aside their competitive spirits and come together as colleagues. For instance, Tope Adeboboye, Weekend Editor, was seen laughing and hugging old friends, a sight that was unusual given his normally reserved demeanor during working hours. The relaxed atmosphere allowed editors to engage in softer conversations, reminisce about old newsroom wars, and share laughter.
The conference also marked a significant milestone for some editors, as new members were inducted into the NGE, while others were elevated to the elite College of Fellows. However, beneath the celebratory atmosphere, subtle hints of future alliances and potential horse-trading for the next Guild election were noticeable. Editors, known for their ability to read between the lines, were aware of the undercurrents.
Amidst the networking and reunions, genuine friendships and memories were rekindled. Kunle Adewale, a virtual friend from AIT, and Igho Akeregha, whom the author first met three decades ago, were among those who reconnected in Enugu. These interactions highlighted the human side of editors, often overshadowed by their professional roles.
On September 26, the tempo of the conference changed, as editors embarked on a project tour led by Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia. The tour provided a platform for editors to engage with the host state and explore potential stories. Linus Okaba Obogo, Chief Press Secretary to Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, delivered a goodwill message that earned him a grand applause.
The 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference concluded on a high note, with editors departing Enugu with renewed relationships, new experiences, and a deeper appreciation for the human side of their profession. As they return to their newsrooms, the memories and connections forged in Enugu are likely to have a lasting impact on their professional and personal lives.
