Major General Ijioma Nwokoro Ijioma, the Action People’s Party (APP) candidate for the Abia State governorship election, has launched his campaign for the 2027 polls with a promise to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Speaking at Umuhu-Ezechi in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Ijioma expressed concern that despite court rulings for Kanu's release, he remains in prison.
Ijioma stated that if elected governor, he would use all available means, including legal avenues, to ensure Kanu's freedom. He drew comparisons between Kanu's case and those of Sunday Igboho and Boko Haram members who have received amnesty. The APP candidate emphasized that his administration would prioritize the release of Kanu, citing the need for justice and equity.
The APP governorship candidate unveiled a 23-item manifesto aimed at transforming Abia State into a modern state. He identified hunger and anger as the primary challenges facing the state, pledging to address these issues through good governance. Ijioma's agenda includes tackling insecurity, particularly the threat posed by Fulani herdsmen, using an "invisible security architecture" approach.
Ijioma outlined plans to boost agriculture in Abia State by establishing 17 large farms in all local government areas and three state farms in the three senatorial zones. This initiative aims to increase food production and make goods more affordable for residents. Additionally, his administration plans to open shops selling subsidized goods to alleviate suffering.
The APP candidate promised to establish a university in Umuhu-Ezechi and reconstruct the area's deplorable roads. He criticized the current administration of Governor Alex Otti, labeling it a "government of error" that needs to be replaced. Ijioma cited instances of alleged financial mismanagement, including the purchase of photocopying machines and Hilux vans, where huge sums were reportedly posted in error.
Ijioma accused the Otti administration of receiving unprecedented revenue but delivering little in return. He contrasted this with his own promise to build a new Abia State based on reality, not propaganda. The APP candidate expressed confidence in his ability to lead the state, citing his survival of 36 road accidents and two near-aircraft crashes as evidence of his destiny to take over Abia State in 2027.
Chief Nkwachukwu Ikwuegbu, a prominent son of Umuhu-Ezechi, commended Ijioma for his determination and urged him to fulfill his promises if elected governor. Ijioma's campaign launch was well-received, with many residents expressing hope for a better future under his leadership.
