Desert Voyages is introducing a new form of experiential tourism in the Tunisian Sahara, focusing on yoga, meditation, and nomadic life under the stars. The agency's upcoming six-day retreat, "Entre sable et étoiles," will take place from November 23 to 29, 2026, and will be led by yoga instructor Thibault Paquin. The journey will begin and end in Djerba, with transportation to a desert camp in a 4x4 vehicle.

The retreat's program is designed to adapt yoga to the natural rhythms of the desert. Optional Hatha and Vinyasa yoga sessions will be held at dawn on the dunes, including Sun Salutations and breathing exercises. During the hottest part of the day, participants can rest, read, or practice Yoga Nidra, a meditative practice done in a lying down position. As the sun sets, the pace will slow with Yin Yoga, and the evening may end with movements inspired by the Moon Salutation and meditation around a campfire.

The scientific community attributes regular yoga practice to various health benefits, including stress management, improved sleep, balance, and overall physical and mental well-being. However, a recent study noted that the quality of evidence for these benefits varies depending on the type of yoga and the study's quality. Exposure to nature has also been linked to better well-being indicators and reduced stress, although it is challenging to separate the effects of the environment from those of physical activity and social interaction.

Desert Voyages' retreats also offer a unique experience called "marche afghane," or Afghan walking, which synchronizes breathing and footsteps. This practice transforms hiking into an exercise in bodily awareness and rhythm, while the caravan handles luggage and logistics. The desert day is also marked by local cuisine and culture, including traditional Tunisian dishes and ingredients.

The agency's approach to tourism prioritizes sustainability and community involvement. By engaging local guides, camel handlers, cooks, and communities, Desert Voyages aims to create a truly immersive and environmentally conscious experience. The impact on fragile ecosystems is minimized, and the economic benefits are distributed locally.

The November retreat is part of a broader range of themed stays offered by Desert Voyages, including Qi Gong, meditation, astronomy, calligraphy, painting, cooking, dance, and other disciplines. The common thread is using the Sahara as an integral part of the experience, rather than just a backdrop for photography.

The retreat's focus on yoga and meditation in the desert offers a unique opportunity for participants to disconnect from their daily routines and reconnect with nature and themselves. With no distractions, just the body, and the sand, which can even challenge the simplest yoga poses.
