The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved a contract worth N31.49 billion for the provision and installation of solar and modular hybrid solar streetlights in Abuja. This decision was made during the FCT Administration Executive Council's meeting, chaired by Wike. The project aims to enhance urban infrastructure, improve nighttime visibility, and boost security across key corridors of the nation's capital.
According to Mrs. Mary Ahmadu, the overseeing Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), the council meeting considered and approved several major infrastructure and environmental maintenance proposals. These proposals were presented by the AMMC and affiliated agencies. The solar lighting project is part of a broader effort to improve the aesthetic and environmental standards of the territory.
In addition to the solar lighting project, the council ratified contracts for the extension of solid waste collection and management services across 40 delineated districts in the FCT. This contract, valued at N5.96 billion, will run from March 1 to November 16, 2025. The goal is to improve public safety and streamline environmental sanitation throughout the metropolis.
The council also approved contracts for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant (WBSTP) for a 24-month period. This contract is valued at N2.21 billion and will also run from March 1 to November 16, 2025. Furthermore, contracts for routine maintenance and management of facilities across selected FCTA departments and public buildings were ratified, amounting to N1.52 billion and N106.16 million, respectively.
Another approved contract is for the evacuation and routine maintenance of communal waste collection points along the Umar Musa Yar'Adua Way. This two-year project, valued at N488.39 million, will be carried out under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB). These contracts aim to sustain high standards of facility maintenance and environmental sanitation.
