On September 28, 2026, in Ouagadougou, IAMGOLD Essakane SA celebrated World Environment Day by rewarding the winners of two initiatives: a project call for higher education institutions and a Facebook competition. As part of the project call, a jury reviewed 18 applications and awarded three groups. The first prize of 1 million CFA francs was won by students from the International Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) with the "OPTI-WAT 360" project. The second and third prizes, worth 500,000 and 300,000 CFA francs respectively, were awarded to students from the Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Development Engineering (IGEDD).
The winning projects focused on innovative solutions for environmental protection. Zakaria Belem, a 2iE student, proposed using artificial intelligence to analyze equipment's electricity consumption. The winners received certificates, vouchers, and gadgets, in addition to their cash prizes. This initiative demonstrates IAMGOLD Essakane SA's commitment to supporting young people's creativity and innovation in environmental protection.
In addition to the project call, three other groups were rewarded as part of the Facebook competition. The ceremony was presided over by Ousseni Ouédraogo, Director-General of the National Environmental Assessment Agency (ANEVE). He welcomed the initiative and encouraged IAMGOLD Essakane SA to continue its awareness-raising actions in favor of the environment.
