National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has defended President William Ruto's re-election bid, urging Kenyans to evaluate his government's development record and ignore opposition calls for a one-term limit. Speaking at a funeral service in Saboti Constituency, Wetang'ula emphasized that Ruto's track record and development initiatives will be crucial in the 2027 General Election.
Wetang'ula drew comparisons with past leaders, citing Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, who all served multiple terms without facing pressure to limit their tenure. He argued that Ruto's administration has implemented various development projects in roads, housing, agriculture, energy, irrigation, and transport, demonstrating its commitment to the country's growth.
However, Wetang'ula acknowledged that some infrastructure projects in Trans-Nzoia have faced delays due to political disagreements. The Maili Tisa-Moi's Bridge-Kitale-Makutano-Kapenguria-Turkana road, estimated to cost Sh18 billion, is one such project that has been affected. He expressed confidence that Kenyans will recognize the efforts of Ruto's administration and dismiss calls for a one-term limit.
Wetang'ula also called for a renewed focus on the health sector in Trans-Nzoia, urging officials to ensure hospitals are well-equipped and stocked with necessary medicines. He emphasized the importance of service delivery, stating that political affiliations should not hinder regional development.
In a surprising move, Wetang'ula urged DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa to leave the United Opposition and collaborate with Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration. He described Wamalwa as "sober, respectful and measured" and promised to support him as his "last line of defence." Wetang'ula also called for unity among western Kenya leaders, stressing that service delivery should be prioritized over political rhetoric.
