The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Suleiman Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office (HNO). Kum, 56, previously served as Deputy Registrar in the HNO's office and Senior Deputy Registrar, Test Administration. He joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and has since held various key positions within the council. Kum's appointment was confirmed by WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.
Kum succeeds Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure as HNO expired on October 1, 2026. Dangut has assumed office as Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of WAEC. According to Adesina, Kum is a seasoned test developer, administrator, and executive with extensive knowledge of test development, test administration, examination security, and branch and zonal office management. Kum has driven administrative and technological innovations throughout his career.
Kum has been credited with pioneering several initiatives, including Variable Data Printing and enhanced code-security features in security printing. He replaced council-wide attendance systems with facial-recognition biometric devices and led the seamless delivery of Achievement Tests using the Computer-Based Examination mode. These innovations have significantly impacted WAEC's operations.
Kum, a Plateau State native, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). His educational background and experience make him well-suited for his new role.
Throughout his career, Kum has served in various key operational capacities, including Assistant Registrar II/Head, Exams Security, in several locations. He has also held positions such as Deputy Registrar/Head, Security Printing Department, and Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator in different zones. Kum's leadership has earned him numerous institutional commendations and awards.
