The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has confirmed that all 42 voting stations in Makana are ready for the upcoming elections. However, concerns have been raised regarding accessibility, particularly in outlying areas. According to Luvuyo Ncipe, the IEC's Regional Assistant Manager for the Sarah Baartman District, areas such as Alicedale, Riebeeck East, Committees Drift, and Douglas Heights have roads in "terrible condition", which may hinder residents' ability to reach the voting stations.

The state of the roads in these areas is a longstanding issue. In July, reports emerged of deteriorating roads in Riebeeck East, making it difficult for residents to access essential services such as work, hospitals, and shops. Photographs taken on 12 July showed flooded, rutted, and impassable roads. Alicedale faces a similar struggle, with the Eastern Cape Department of Transport estimating in 2023 that it would cost over R602 million to tar the 30km gravel road connecting the town to the N2.

The IEC has taken steps to address these concerns, writing to the Makana Local Municipality to request intervention. The municipality is expected to provide feedback by 14 October. In addition to accessibility concerns, electricity is another issue affecting six voting stations in the area, including Committees Drift Tent, Gardeners Gate Tent, and Douglas Height Tent. The IEC has also requested additional facilities, such as toilets, at several voting stations.

Furthermore, voters at several stations may face long waits in the heat unless additional shelter and seating are provided. Seven stations, including Umzi WaseTopiya, St Aidans, and Assumption Clinic, require a waiting tent and 30 chairs. Three other stations, the Indoor Sports Centre, Hlalani Hall, and Recreation Hall, require chairs only. The IEC has identified a range of challenges across the Sarah Baartman District, including 28 voting stations without electricity, 19 without water, and 25 with sanitation problems.

The IEC's concerns highlight the need for cooperation between the commission and local authorities to ensure that voting stations are adequately equipped and accessible. Grocott's Mail approached Makana Local Municipality spokesperson Anele Mjekula to establish what action the municipality was taking to address these concerns. However, no response had been received by the time of publication.

Despite these challenges, Ncipe confirmed that Makana's 39 permanent voting stations and three tent-based stations were ready, with no relocations planned. The IEC's efforts to address the concerns and ensure that voting stations are ready for the elections are ongoing. The commission's identification of challenges across the district underscores the importance of collaboration between the IEC and local authorities.

The situation in Makana highlights the complexities of ensuring that voting stations are accessible and equipped to handle the demands of the electoral process. As the elections approach, the IEC and local authorities will need to work together to address the identified challenges and ensure that all residents can exercise their right to vote.
