A 29-year-old visually impaired student, Sibusiso Zondo, has graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Zondo, who was born semi-blind, can see figures and colours to some extent but is unable to read text on paper or screens. His academic journey has not been easy, but he expressed gratitude to God for seeing him through his studies. He also thanked his family for supporting his dream of attending university and acknowledged UKZN's Disability Unit for providing assistive devices, systems, and software applications that helped him navigate his academic journey.
The support provided by UKZN's Disability Unit, including JAWS and the Braille Pocket Reader, played a significant role in Zondo's success. He hails from Manzana in Bergville and said graduating was equally significant for him. Zondo's achievement is a testament to his hard work and determination, and his family is immensely proud of him. His brother, Sicelo, said that Zondo graduating means more to them than any of their own accomplishments.
Sicelo wished that their parents were alive to witness the milestone, but he is proud of Zondo for fulfilling his dream. The family's only wish now is for Zondo to secure employment, become self-sufficient, and be able to support himself. Zondo's achievement is not an isolated incident, as 22 students with disabilities graduated during UKZN's Spring Graduation ceremonies.

Zondo is applying for internships and hopes to pursue a postgraduate diploma in Human Resources or Transport and Logistics next year.
