A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize governance and address security concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections. Oyintiloye emphasized that the President should not be swayed by opposition tactics. Instead, he should focus on tackling security threats identified by security agencies. This appeal comes against the backdrop of a recent intelligence alert by the Department of State Services regarding potential attacks on vulnerable locations, particularly in the southern part of Nigeria.
Oyintiloye made the remarks while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday. He stressed the need for the President to support security agencies in intensifying surveillance and strengthening inter-agency collaboration. This, he believes, will help safeguard lives and property amid emerging security concerns. The APC chieftain, a former lawmaker, also advocated for heightened vigilance, improved intelligence gathering, and coordinated preventive action nationwide to address the growing security threats.
The APC chieftain urged all relevant security agencies to work closely together, share intelligence, and strengthen surveillance and rapid response mechanisms. He particularly highlighted the need for increased security around schools, places of worship, NYSC facilities, parks, garages, and other vulnerable locations, especially with schools currently in session. This, he believes, will help prevent potential attacks and ensure a safe environment for citizens.
Oyintiloye also called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the recent killings in Osun State. He urged security agencies to identify all persons suspected to have participated in, sponsored, or facilitated the violence. Those against whom sufficient evidence is established, he emphasized, should be prosecuted in accordance with the law. This, he believes, will help bring perpetrators to justice and prevent future occurrences.
The APC chieftain appealed to all stakeholders, including transport workers, community leaders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He encouraged them to provide credible information that could assist investigations and prevent further violence. Oyintiloye expressed confidence in the professionalism, competence, and dedication of Nigeria’s security personnel, noting that they possess the capacity to flush out criminal elements and restore lasting peace.
Oyintiloye further called for the strengthening of security intelligence through adequate training, equipment, and resources. This, he believes, will enable security agencies to forestall, prevent, detect, and respond effectively to attacks by armed groups. He also suggested that service chiefs review and adjust their operational strategies if necessary, as time is of the essence in addressing the security concerns.
Oyintiloye emphasized that governors and local government chairmen must take proactive measures to strengthen local intelligence and maintain peace, as they are closer to the grassroots. He stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful development in an atmosphere of insecurity and that economic growth, infrastructure development, investment, and social services thrive only in a peaceful environment.
