Luanda Member of Parliament, Dick Maungu, has secured Sh10 million from the national government for the renovation and elevation of Ekwanda Health Centre in Luanda South Ward, Vihiga County. The health centre, which has been facing numerous challenges, including a recent flooding incident, is expected to be upgraded to a Level 4 hospital. The flooding incident had forced the health centre to close for several months, affecting residents of eight sub-locations in Luanda South and neighbouring constituencies.
A team from the National Government, led by Dr. Hezron Omollo, Head of Health Infrastructure Projects and Grants Management, recently held a planning meeting at the facility to discuss its improvement. The team was welcomed by Constituency Manager Peter Ndeche and Luanda South Ward Administrator Ocholla. The meeting was a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by the health centre and ensuring that residents receive quality healthcare services.
The Ekwanda Health Centre currently serves residents of eight sub-locations in Luanda South and neighbouring constituencies of Seme, Kisumu West, and Gem. MP Maungu noted that he is partnering with the County Government of Vihiga to ensure the hospital gets enough funding in the next supplementary budget. This will enable the construction of a modern storey building at the facility before pushing for its elevation to a Level 4 hospital.
Maungu emphasized that although health is a devolved function, the National Government can provide assistance through intergovernmental participation. He noted that this collaborative framework will ensure that residents benefit from the partnership between the national and county governments. In addition to the health facility, MP Maungu is also lobbying for the elevation of Maseno VTC to a National Polytechnic. He is also pushing for the construction of a modern market at Ekwanda Centre and the improvement of the Maseno ATC-Mukhuyu-Ebukuya Road to bitumen standards.
