The United States has withdrawn all B-1 bombers deployed at RAF Fairford in Britain after a security incident involving suspected terrorist activity near the airbase. The Pentagon confirmed that the bombers had returned to their home stations in the United States. This move comes days after British authorities arrested five men near the Gloucestershire facility on September 27.
RAF Fairford has been an important base for US military operations in Europe and was recently used to support American strikes against targets in Iran. The base is one of the few European airfields capable of handling America’s heavy bomber aircraft. Its location makes it strategically important as it allows US aircraft to operate closer to potential targets than they would from bases in the continental United States.
The arrests near RAF Fairford were made after reports of people running into fields from three white vans parked close to the facility. Police said they did not find explosives, although petrol was reportedly discovered. A sixth person, a British-Iranian dual national, was separately arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts and has been released on bail as investigations continue.
US President Donald Trump previously suggested that the suspects appeared to have been planning to cause “big damage” and implied that Iran might have been involved. However, Iran has rejected these allegations. The Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that all US bombers stationed at Fairford had been redeployed to their home bases.
The withdrawal of the bombers reduces the immediate availability of US heavy bombers from the British base. However, American officials stressed that the wider US bomber fleet remains capable of conducting operations from other locations. Analysts said the redeployment does not necessarily represent a major change in US military capability.
Christoph Bergs, a research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, noted that moving the aircraft back to the United States would reduce Washington’s ability to rapidly increase sorties against Iran in the short term. The aircraft could potentially be deployed elsewhere, including Diego Garcia or US-linked facilities in the Gulf.
The development comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and heightened concerns over attacks against US interests in Britain and elsewhere. NATO has said the withdrawal would not affect the alliance’s overall defensive capability. British authorities are continuing to investigate the alleged plot near RAF Fairford.
