The University of Oxford has retained its position as the world's highest-ranked university for an 11th consecutive year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027. The rankings, released on September 30, 2026, assess research-intensive institutions across 118 countries and territories. A total of 2,297 universities were evaluated based on teaching, research, international outlook, and links with industry.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains second, finishing just 0.1 point behind Oxford. American universities occupy seven places in the top ten, with British institutions taking the other three. The top ten list includes Princeton University and Stanford University, which share third place, while the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University tie for ninth.
The University of Cambridge moved from joint third to fifth, while Stanford climbed from joint fifth to joint third. Yale advanced from tenth to share ninth place with Berkeley, resulting in no separately assigned fourth or tenth positions. The rankings also saw China's Tsinghua University rise to 11th, overtaking Switzerland's ETH Zurich.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluate universities across five areas: teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry (4%). Research environment and research quality account for 59% of the overall score, placing considerable weight on an institution's research performance.
