The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Ibadan Chapter has awarded scholarships totaling N1.1 million to 11 indigent students. The scholarship awards, presented on Thursday, October 29, 2026, aim to support students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The Vice Chairman of UI ASUU, Dr. Tayo Ajibade, represented the Chairman, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, at the event.

According to Dr. Ajibade, the national body of ASUU directed all chapters to support indigent students. The UI ASUU chapter received 56 applications but only 11 were deemed qualified for the scholarship. The awardees received varying amounts: N200,000 each to two students from the National Body of the Union, N100,000 to five recipients from the University of Ibadan Chapter of ASUU, and N50,000 each to four students donated by Professor Tajudeen Akanji.

The beneficiaries include Olawale Esther Inioluwa, a 300-level Archaeology and Anthropology student; Orji Cynthia Adaeze, a 300-level Political Science student; and Dosunmu Mazeedah Omobonike of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Others are Oyeniyi Oluwaseyi, a 400-level Pharmacy student; Aanuoluwa Adeshewa Mary, a 400-level Physiotherapy student; Ameenat Eniola of the Department of Economics; and Olowode Afusat Temitayo. The four students who received N50,000 each are Ogundare Marvellous, Williams Happiness Patient, Oladepo Peter Olamide, and Gbadegesin Daniel.

Dr. Ajibade emphasized that ASUU recognizes education as the best gift to anyone, and the union is committed to championing improved funding for qualitative education. He noted that poverty should not disqualify a Nigerian child from accessing education. The ASUU Vice Chairman stated that the union will continue to clamor for increased funding and support indigent students.

Professor Tajudeen Akanji, one of the benefactors, expressed his commitment to supporting indigent students, citing his background as a son of a carpenter who rose to the peak of his career. He pledged to continue supporting students in any way he can. The professor's donation enabled four students to receive N50,000 each.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude and surprise at receiving the awards. Olawale Esther Inioluwa urged her fellow students to prioritize academic excellence, while Oladepo Peter Olamide appreciated the initiative and encouraged his colleagues to remain committed to their studies. The scholarship initiative aims to encourage students to work harder and achieve academic success.

The UI ASUU chapter's Indigent Student Scholarship Awards demonstrate the union's commitment to supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative is part of ASUU's efforts to promote qualitative education and alleviate the financial burden on indigent students. The union's support for education is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of Nigerian students.
