The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has announced that two of its officers will travel to India to pursue master's degrees in forensic science. This initiative, revealed on October 30, 2026, aims to improve the Force's technical capabilities and enhance criminal investigations. The officers received their travel tickets during a ceremony at the Directorate of Training, Police Headquarters, in Freetown.

The advanced academic program will equip the officers with specialized knowledge in forensic investigation, scientific evidence analysis, and modern crime detection techniques. Acting Director of Training, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) John Fayiah Tumbay, presented the travel documents to the officers and encouraged them to approach their studies with discipline, dedication, and professionalism.

ACP Tumbay reminded the officers that they will represent both Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Police during their academic program in India. He urged them to demonstrate exemplary conduct and make full use of the opportunity to acquire specialized skills. The officers' training could support efforts to strengthen scientific approaches to criminal investigations and improve evidence handling.

Following the completion of their studies, the two officers are expected to contribute to the development of forensic investigation practices within the Sierra Leone Police. Their training will introduce additional specialist expertise into the Force, improving forensic capabilities and assisting investigators in examining complex cases and presenting reliable evidence during judicial proceedings.

The initiative forms part of Inspector-General William Fayia Sellu's efforts to strengthen professionalism and operational effectiveness within the Sierra Leone Police. Specialized training and human resource development remain key areas of focus, enabling the Force to respond more effectively to evolving security and investigative challenges.

The decision to support postgraduate studies in forensic science highlights the growing importance of technical expertise in modern law enforcement. The Sierra Leone Police has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in personnel development and improving service delivery. The officers' expected return with advanced forensic knowledge represents an opportunity to strengthen scientific investigations and support the administration of justice in Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone Police hopes that investing in advanced training will contribute to more effective investigations and improved public confidence in police services. This development is part of a broader effort to modernize policing in Sierra Leone and enhance the professionalism of the Force.
