The Tutu Memorial Park project has reached a significant milestone with the turning of the first sod in Milnerton, Cape Town. The park, previously known as Lupin Park, holds a special connection to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his family, as it is situated directly opposite their home. The park was a familiar part of the Archbishop's daily life, where he would walk, interact with neighbours and children, and collect his thoughts.
The memorial park will feature an extensive children's play area, reflecting Archbishop Tutu's love for children, as well as a reflective memorial garden, an amphitheatre, picnic and gathering spaces, and a dedicated dog free-run area. The park will also be landscaped with recreational areas, and will include murals, sculptures, mosaics, and other public artworks that tell the story of Archbishop Tutu's life and legacy. These additions aim to create a warm and welcoming space for everyone.
Mama Leah Tutu, who still resides opposite the park, attended the sod-turning ceremony, expressing her gratitude to those who made the project possible. She led guests in three cheers, emphasising the significance of the project to her family. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Councillor Francine Higham, who highlighted the importance of the location, given the Archbishop's connection to the area.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised that the strongest focus of the project was always going to be children, with the amphitheatre providing a community stage for local artists, dancers, and performers. Dr Mamphela Ramphele, chairperson of the Archbishop Tutu Intellectual Property Trust, highlighted the importance of respecting nature, a value that Archbishop Tutu held dear. She encouraged visitors to remember the Archbishop's example and strive to be self-respecting and respectful of the ecosystem. The park's construction is expected to take about six months, after which it will become a vibrant community space.
