The Tunisian tax authority, Direction Générale des Impôts (DGI), has reported a significant increase in tax-related queries in 2026. According to the DGI's Centre d'information fiscale à distance (CIFD), the authority handled over 22,000 calls in the first nine months of the year, concerning 26,748 questions. This represents a 25.15% increase in calls compared to the same period in 2025.

The CIFD responded to the queries with a rate of over 91%. In September alone, the centre received 2,475 calls, concerning 2,987 questions, with a 99.9% immediate response rate and a 91.1% satisfaction rate with the responses provided. The majority of calls came from individuals, accounting for 54.9% of queries, while companies made up 45.1%.

The most common themes addressed in the queries were related to the TEJ digital platform, which accounted for 17.07% of questions, followed by administrative procedures (11.15%) and income tax (9.74%). The service sector was the most represented, making up 23.51% of queries, followed by non-commercial activities (14.65%) and commercial activities (8.11%).

The DGI attributed the increase in queries to the growing need for information on tax procedures and systems. To address this, the CIFD remains available to provide guidance via the short number 81.100.400. The authority aims to improve taxpayer services and provide accurate information to facilitate compliance.

The surge in tax queries highlights the importance of effective communication between taxpayers and the tax authority. The DGI's efforts to improve its services and provide clear information are crucial in ensuring taxpayers' compliance with tax regulations. The authority's focus on digital platforms, such as TEJ, also underscores the need for taxpayers to adapt to new technologies.

The increase in tax queries may also be linked to changes in tax regulations or policies. The DGI's role in providing guidance and support to taxpayers is essential in helping them navigate these changes. By providing accurate and timely information, the authority can help reduce errors and ensure that taxpayers are meeting their obligations.

The DGI's performance in handling tax queries demonstrates its commitment to improving taxpayer services. With a significant increase in queries, the authority has maintained a high response rate and satisfaction level. This achievement is a positive step towards enhancing tax compliance and fostering a more efficient tax system in Tunisia.
