The Kef Regional Commission for Agricultural Development presented an overview of the previous agricultural season and preparations for the 2026-2027 season during a working session at the regional headquarters. A total of 229,000 hectares have been allocated for major crops in the region, including 200,000 hectares for grain cultivation.
The meeting included a presentation by a representative of the Chemical Complex on the importance of chemical fertilizers in agricultural production and the 2026-2027 supply program. The region's needs for chemical fertilizers, such as agricultural ammonium nitrate, diammonium phosphate, and triple superphosphate, were determined to ensure farmers' needs are met during the planting season.
To support farmers, agricultural guidance cells in various delegations of the region have initiated training sessions for a number of farmers, along with field visits, awareness campaigns, and technical interventions at farms. Additionally, a seed analysis process has begun in collaboration with the National Institute of Large-Scale Agriculture, and soil samples have been collected for 512 farmers. By September 18, 2026, 362 samples had been analyzed, and agricultural alerts had been issued regarding disease control for grains.
The session also addressed agricultural indicators and the results of the previous season, as well as the latest preparations for the new season. The discussion highlighted the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in the region and ways to promote investment. Kef Governor Walid Kaabia emphasized the importance of this meeting in preparing for the current agricultural season, which will contribute to its success and enhance food security.
Governor Kaabia stressed the pivotal role of banking and financial institutions in supporting the grain system and announced that files of debtors among farmers would be studied, with the possibility of rescheduling their debts. He also called for easier access to seasonal loans and the strengthening of agricultural insurance mechanisms to mitigate natural risks and ensure the continuity of activity and investment.
