The Tunisian government has announced that prices on certain vegetable oils and cheeses will decrease starting this weekend, October 31 and November 1. According to Ramzi Trabelsi, director of the National Observatory of Supply and Prices (ONAP), the reductions will reach up to 1 dinar 800 for cheeses and 7 dinars for the affected oils. The price drops are expected to bring relief to consumers who have been facing high prices for these essential items.

The price reductions will primarily affect cheeses sold in portions and certain vegetable oils packaged in 1.8 to 5-liter formats. Specifically, cheeses in boxes of 8 and 16 portions will see price decreases of 800 to 1800 millimes. Meanwhile, select vegetable oils will experience reductions ranging from 3 dinars 700 to 7 dinars. However, oils such as corn and sunflower oil will not be included in this operation, as per the ONAP director.

Ramzi Trabelsi made the announcement on October 29 during an appearance on the radio show Sbeh Ennes on Mosaïque FM. He did not provide detailed information on the specific brands, product references, or new sales prices. The implementation of these reductions will begin in large commercial areas this weekend, with plans for a gradual rollout to other formal sales points.

The duration of this operation and the exact date of its generalization to all sales points remain unclear. In addition to the price reductions, Trabelsi announced that additional quantities of imported rice will be released into the market in the coming days to meet sustained demand. This move aims to stabilize the market and provide consumers with more affordable options.

When asked about the recent surge in shrimp prices, Trabelsi explained that shrimp prices are not fixed by the Ministry of Commerce and instead fluctuate according to supply and demand. He noted that prices had previously dropped significantly when supply was abundant, only to rise again with increased demand. However, Trabelsi emphasized that current shrimp prices remain lower than their usual levels.

Trabelsi also addressed the issue of speculation on subsidized oil, mentioning a recent case where a businessman and three co-accused received 35-year prison sentences. The government appears to be taking a firm stance on market manipulation and price-fixing. By introducing price reductions and increasing the availability of essential goods, the authorities aim to alleviate some of the economic pressures faced by Tunisian consumers.

The price reductions on vegetable oils and cheeses are expected to have a positive impact on the purchasing power of Tunisian citizens. With the cost of living being a significant concern for many, the government's efforts to stabilize prices and increase the supply of essential goods are likely to be welcomed by the public. As the situation continues to unfold, consumers will be watching closely to see the effects of these changes on the market.
