The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 have been released, featuring 29 Nigerian universities, an increase from 24 in the 2026 edition. Nigeria has the largest number of ranked institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. Covenant University, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Lagos lead Nigeria's entries, all placed in the global 801–1000 band. The top 10 universities in Nigeria are grouped into three global ranking bands. In the 801–1000 band are Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State; University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State; and University of Lagos, Lagos State. The 1001–1200 band comprises Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State; Bayero University, Kano State; Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State; and University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The 1201–1400 band includes Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State; Osun State University, Osun State; and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State. The rankings provide a starting point for applicants, but course accreditation, fees, facilities, and the strength of the intended department still need separate checks.
A strong overall position in the rankings reflects substantial research performance, but it does not establish that every course at a university is stronger than the equivalent programme elsewhere. Research environment and research quality together account for 59% of the overall score, which matters when interpreting the results.
The bands also have limits, with placement in 801–1000 not meaning an institution ranks exactly 801st. Sharing a band does not necessarily mean universities received identical scores. A university's global position can help build a shortlist, but the final choice should rest on what it offers in the course a student actually wants to study.
