The Tooro Kingdom is grappling with a succession crisis following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27 in the United States. The 34-year-old king had been receiving treatment abroad. According to Tooro's former Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, the family had initially planned to bring King Oyo's child back to Uganda from the United States. However, due to the intensifying succession dispute, they decided it was not in the child's best interest to be brought into the tense and polarized situation. As a result, the child remains in Texas. Kemigisa made these remarks through her official social media handle.
A 21-member committee of the Babiito clan has selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new king, and preparations are underway for his coronation on September 29. However, the selection has not been universally accepted, with some factions disputing the legitimacy of the process. The succession dispute was further complicated by conflicting claims about the existence of King Oyo's son, who some claim is the rightful heir to the throne.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced shortly after King Oyo's death that the late king had left behind a son who was his heir. He stated that the child's identity would be revealed at an appropriate time, in accordance with Tooro customs. President Yoweri Museveni later confirmed that Kemigisa had informed him of the child's existence.
However, Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, head of the Babiito royal clan, disputed the claim, stating that the clan had not been aware of the child. The conflicting claims have heightened tensions within the kingdom, with different factions vying for control. Kemigisa emphasized that her priority after King Oyo's death was to ensure a peaceful and dignified burial, which she felt was not fully realized due to the hasty formation of a committee to select a new king.
Kemigisa has called for an end to the divisions within Tooro, urging the kingdom's people to work towards unity and service rather than fighting and division. She, along with Princess Ruth Komuntale, plans to preserve King Oyo's legacy through projects under the proposed King Oyo Memorial Foundation. These projects include the establishment of the King Oyo Tooro Museum, the King Oyo International Stadium, and a research and teaching hospital.
The planned projects aim to transform King Oyo's legacy into practical services for the people, rather than simply creating monuments in his name. Kemigisa also expressed gratitude to Ugandans, religious leaders, health workers, and friends who supported the royal family during King Oyo's illness, death, and burial. The kingdom remains in a state of uncertainty as it navigates this critical juncture in its history.
