The Togolese Press Agency reports that the Association of Gerontology and Social Inclusion (AGIS-TOGO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Action and the Agoè-Nyivé 3 commune, is celebrating the International Day of Older Persons from September 29 to October 1 in Agoè-Nyivé 3. This delayed celebration aims to promote the well-being, health, and social inclusion of older adults. The event is themed "Aging in good health: what precautions to take?" and features the participation of the Mayor of Agoè-Nyivé 3, N'Galou Passoki, older adults from various communes, and technical and financial partners.
The objective of this celebration is to contribute to a better consideration of the aging population in Togo by sensitizing public, private, community, and family actors on the need to rethink health, social protection, accompaniment, and inclusion systems. The goal is to guarantee older adults a longer, healthier, dignified, and fulfilling life. Over three days, several activities are planned, including medical consultations and check-ups, a sports day, and a closing ceremony.
The representative of the Minister of Social Action, Mme Adika Emilie, praised the commitment of partners whose support contributes to improving the living conditions of older adults. She emphasized that this year's theme calls for collective and individual awareness, particularly through the adoption of preventive behaviors throughout life. Mme Adika also stressed the importance of a healthy and balanced diet that helps prevent several chronic diseases.
Mme Adika recalled that healthy aging relies not only on physical activity but also on good hygiene and a balanced lifestyle. The representative of the Prefect of Agoè-Nyivé, Mme Kpotrofou Akouavi, welcomed the event, which provides a framework for awareness, exchange, and promotion of the well-being of older adults. She encouraged actors to continue initiatives in favor of better care for older adults for a more inclusive society.
The Executive Director of AGIS-TOGO, Bruno Ahiago, invited older adults to pay particular attention to preserving their health. He encouraged them to adopt a balanced diet and maintain physical activity adapted to their age, such as walking and appropriate exercises. M. Ahiago also emphasized the importance of maintaining social ties, securing the living environment of older adults, and promoting their participation in community life.
M. Ahiago called on the community to further support older adults so that they can live this stage of their life with dignity and fulfillment. The International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to recall the need to strengthen actions in favor of active aging and the protection of the rights of older adults. This event is a significant step towards promoting healthy aging and social inclusion in Togo.
The three-day celebration in Agoè-Nyivé 3 demonstrates the commitment of Togolese authorities and stakeholders to addressing the challenges and opportunities of an aging population. By working together, they aim to create a society that values and supports its older adults, ensuring they live healthy, dignified, and fulfilling lives.
