Thomas Mapfumo, a renowned Chimurenga music artist, has verified that he was paid his entire US$1 million performance fee by Wicknell Chivayo prior to traveling to Zimbabwe for two scheduled events. Mapfumo was booked to perform at Jah Prayzah's wedding and Chivayo's birthday and housewarming celebration. However, both events were postponed following Chivayo's death in a helicopter crash on October 1, 2026.

According to Hopewell Chin'ono, a prominent journalist, Mapfumo confirmed receiving the payment in a conversation with him. Chin'ono shared a screenshot of a post attributed to Chivayo, dated July 14, 2026, where Chivayo announced that Mapfumo had become an "official millionaire" in United States dollars. This public declaration supports Mapfumo's account of receiving the payment.

Chivayo's post also mentioned that he had planned further gifts for Mapfumo, including a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series ZX, which he wanted Mapfumo to collect and use. Additionally, Chivayo expressed his desire to finance a house for Mapfumo in Borrowdale, with a large yard where he could occasionally perform for his friends.

Despite social media claims that Mapfumo had traveled to Zimbabwe without receiving payment, Chin'ono defended the musician, stating that it was unlikely for Mapfumo to travel with a large band without securing payment first. Chin'ono criticized those demanding that Mapfumo produce bank statements as proof, describing such requests as absurd.

Mapfumo and his band, The Blacks Unlimited, have issued a condolence message following the deaths of Chivayo, his wife Lucy, and other crash victims. The group expressed sympathy to the victims' families and prayed for strength and comfort. Mapfumo's Chimurenga Music Company has also confirmed its commitment to performing at Jah Prayzah's postponed wedding.

Jah Prayzah, whose real name is Mukudzeyi Mukombe, and his wife Rufaro postponed their wedding, initially scheduled for October 3, 2026, out of respect for Chivayo and the other victims. Mapfumo's performance at the wedding will be fulfilled once a new date is confirmed.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of tributes and reflections on Chivayo's life and legacy. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa granted Chivayo provincial hero status and visited his children and ex-wife, Sonja.
