Tanzanian lawmaker Mabula Magangila has urged the government to increase investment in the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). Magangila made the call during a visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Culture, and Sports to the institute. He emphasized that NM-AIST has a reputation in Africa for its research, innovation, and capacity building, and that the government should invest more to make its work visible and beneficial to society.
Magangila stressed that government investment in science and technology institutions should focus on developing products and technologies that can be commercially produced and sold. He noted that the private sector cannot replace the government's role in investing in large research infrastructure. However, he suggested that a framework be established to facilitate collaboration between the government and the private sector to develop innovations and turn them into economic opportunities.
The lawmaker also discussed the potential of information technology infrastructure, saying that digital data storage and management centers can be a significant source of national revenue if developed through public-private partnerships. He suggested that Tanzania could use this infrastructure to provide data storage and protection services to local and international institutions, generating revenue through technology sales.
Magangila praised NM-AIST for its work and investment, saying it is a crucial foundation for strengthening Tanzania's capacity in science, technology, and innovation. He encouraged the government to utilize NM-AIST's potential in research, innovation, and transforming research results into commercial products and services that can stimulate Tanzania's economic development and that of Africa as a whole.
The parliamentary committee's visit to NM-AIST was part of an effort to assess the institute's research activities and implementation of the Samia Scholarship program. The committee aimed to understand the institute's work and identify areas for support. Magangila's comments reflect concerns about the need for increased investment in science and technology to drive economic growth.
NM-AIST is recognized for its contributions to research, innovation, and capacity building in Africa. The institute plays a vital role in advancing science and technology in Tanzania and the broader African region. Increased investment in the institute could enhance its ability to develop and commercialize new technologies and products.
