Medikea, a Tanzanian healthtech company, has successfully raised $1.2 million in pre-seed funding to further expand its operations. The funding round was led by prominent investors, including Baobab Network, Catalyst Fund, and develoPPP Ventures. Other participants in the round included Madica, Impacc, Hustle Fund, O’Shaughnessy Ventures, Madiro, and one angel investor. This significant investment will enable Medikea to open new sites in Arusha and Morogoro, bringing its total network to four clinics.
Medikea operates a unique healthcare model, running its own clinics, diagnostic labs, and pharmacies. This approach allows the company to provide comprehensive care to patients, including round-the-clock virtual consultations with a salaried clinical team. Medikea's technology is built in-house, enabling the company to maintain control over the quality of care and costs. By owning the delivery of care, Medikea aims to provide affordable and high-quality healthcare services to patients in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian healthcare system faces significant challenges, with public facilities often overwhelmed and private care priced out of reach for many individuals. Patients frequently travel to multiple locations for consultations, diagnostics, and specialist care, with no single record linking their journey. This fragmented system leads to delayed or skipped treatment, with many patients opting for self-medication at pharmacy counters. Medikea's integrated approach seeks to address these issues and provide a more streamlined and effective healthcare experience.
Medikea's business model is designed to capture revenue across the full episode of care, rather than relying solely on consultation fees. By owning the clinic, laboratory, and pharmacy, the company can provide a range of services, including specialist care in areas such as paediatrics, women's health, and chronic disease. These services generate higher revenue per patient and stronger margins, providing a clear path to profitability as the network grows.
According to Dr. Elvis Silayo, co-founder and chief executive of Medikea, the company's approach is centred on building trust with patients. By providing in-person consultations and follow-up care, Medikea establishes a relationship with patients, making them more likely to engage with virtual consultations and adhere to treatment plans. This approach has shown promising results, with patients who first meet a doctor in person more willing to consult with that doctor online later.
Medikea's growth plans are ambitious, with the company aiming to treat over 100,000 patients in the next 12 months. The new funding will be used to drive growth, develop new products, and expand specialist services. Medikea currently serves both out-of-pocket patients and insured members, with partnerships including NHIF, Jubilee Insurance, Assemble Insurance, and GA Insurance. The company plans to expand from four clinics to 10 across Tanzania by the end of 2027, before entering other African markets.
The investment in Medikea has been welcomed by investors, who see the company as a leader in the Tanzanian healthcare sector. Maxime Bayen, a partner at Catalyst Fund, noted that Medikea's approach has the potential to deliver a more affordable, continuous, and climate-resilient model of outpatient care. As climate-related health risks continue to grow in the communities Medikea serves, the company's integrated approach is well-positioned to address these challenges and advance health and longevity for millions of people across Africa.
