The District Chief Executive for Afadzato South, Mr Manfred Tawiah, has made a significant donation to Logba Vuinta Akusame Basic School in the Afadzato South District of Ghana. The donation, which includes goalposts and footballs, is expected to boost sporting activities in the district, particularly at the grassroots level. Mr Tawiah presented the items to the pupils during a ceremony, emphasizing his commitment to promoting grassroots football and nurturing young talent from the community level.
The Afadzato South District, comprising many rural communities such as Logba, Ve, Have, Liati, and Goviefe, is known for its abundant football talent. However, the district faces a lack of basic sporting infrastructure in many basic schools, which has limited inter-school competitions, physical education periods, and the ability of schools to prepare for district and regional school sports festivals. The new goalposts and footballs at Logba Vuinta Akusame Basic School are expected to address some of these challenges.
The donation is expected to have several positive impacts on the school and the district. The new goalposts will revive regular inter-class and inter-school football competitions in the Logba zone, serve as a training centre for surrounding schools that lack equipment, and encourage girl-child participation in sports. Additionally, the donation will promote discipline, teamwork, health, and fitness among pupils, and keep the youth engaged after school hours.
Mr Tawiah also used the opportunity to encourage the pupils to work hard in sports while keeping their education a top priority. He urged them to make good use of the new facility and equipment, and assured them that his office, in collaboration with the District Education Directorate and the District Sports Unit, will roll out a district-wide school sports revival programme to support other deprived schools with similar equipment in the coming months.
The District Chief Executive noted that investing in school sports is a key pathway to building the district's representation at the regional and national level, including the Ghana Education Service Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival and the Ghana Football Association's Colts and KGL Foundation U-17 Inter-Regional Championship. He emphasized the importance of promoting inclusive school sports, particularly for girl-child participation.
The Logba Vuinta Akusame Basic School is one of the beneficiary schools of the district-wide school sports revival programme. The school's administration has expressed gratitude to the DCE for the donation, which is expected to improve the school's sports infrastructure and promote physical education among pupils. The programme is also expected to identify talents for the district's juvenile teams and promote school sports in the district.
The donation by Mr Tawiah is part of his efforts to address some of the school's requests, including completing and equipping its computer laboratory. The DCE pledged to work towards addressing these requests, demonstrating his commitment to improving education and sports infrastructure in the district. The programme is expected to have a positive impact on the district's sports development and promote a culture of physical activity among pupils.
