The Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET) has donated 1,000 bags of 10-kilogramme organic fertiliser to support the 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ghana. The donation was made by Mr Stephen Nhyira Odarteifio, Lead Coordinator of GAFET, to Mr John Dumelo, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, in Accra. This gesture aims to recognise and reward farmers, particularly young people engaged in agriculture.
The National Farmers’ Day celebration is scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2026, in Sunyani, Bono Region. The event, instituted in 1985, provides a platform to honour outstanding farmers and other agricultural stakeholders. This year's celebration will be held on the theme: “Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future.” The donation by GAFET is expected to encourage young people to adopt organic farming practices.
According to Mr Odarteifio, the donation was motivated by the need to support farmers whose efforts sustain food production across the country. As the incoming National Youth Organiser, he wanted to impact young people positively and contribute to the celebration. He explained that the fertiliser was made from saprophilic colloids and active peat, highlighting its organic and environmentally friendly nature.
Mr Dumelo, on behalf of the Ministry, thanked GAFET for the donation, saying it would be distributed directly to farmers as part of the awards and support package for the celebration. He noted that the donation had come at an opportune time, as the Ministry continued preparations and mobilised resources to reward outstanding farmers.
The Deputy Minister emphasised the importance of the fertiliser donation, stating that it would be put to good use and distributed accordingly to the farmers. The Ministry aims to recognise the contributions of farmers and fishers to national development and food security. The annual event has become a significant platform for honouring deserving individuals in the agricultural sector.
Mr Odarteifio's donation also seeks to promote organic agriculture among young people, encouraging them to embrace sustainable farming practices. The GAFET Lead Coordinator believes that this initiative will not only support farmers but also contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector in Ghana.
The National Farmers’ Day celebration will bring together farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and government officials to appreciate the efforts of those in the agricultural sector. The event is expected to feature awards, exhibitions, and discussions on issues affecting the sector. GAFET's donation is a significant contribution to the success of this year's celebration.
