Tanzania's tourism industry is poised for a boost with the upcoming 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha. Scheduled for October 5-9, 2026, the event will draw approximately 2,000 participants from 183 parliaments. The assembly, set to take place at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), presents a significant opportunity for local tour operators, guides, hotels, and other service providers to increase business.

The influx of international visitors will not only generate income during the meeting but also introduce them to Tanzania's attractions, potentially encouraging extended stays. Tour operators and transport service providers are expected to see increased demand, as visitors will require transfers between the airport, hotels, AICC, and other parts of the city, as well as trips to tourist attractions.

According to Violet Mfuko, director of Viola Tours, the meeting allows tour operators and transport service providers to promote their businesses and establish commercial relationships with visitors. The accommodation sector is also expected to record increased activity due to demand for hotel rooms.

The food service sector will have an opportunity to serve visitors and showcase Tanzanian cuisine and locally produced food. Juliana John, a food service provider, noted that the meeting presents a chance for businesses to use local products and showcase Tanzanian cuisine to international visitors.

Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Dr. Toba Nguvila, urged private-sector stakeholders to provide quality services and ensure the city is ready to accommodate visitors. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government and the private sector to ensure major international meetings generate benefits for citizens.

The meeting is expected to increase activity in various sectors, including transport, food, accommodation, and health services, due to the large number of delegates and visitors. For tourism operators, the assembly provides an opportunity to showcase the city's attractions while building relationships with international visitors who could return for leisure or recommend the country to others.

The event is expected to provide businesses with immediate opportunities during the assembly and potential longer-term benefits through increased awareness of Tanzania as a tourist destination. The IPU assembly will not only bring economic benefits but also promote Tanzania's image as a host of international events.
