In a move to support artisans from the Guiriko region, SITARAIL has launched a free train service, dubbed the "train de l'artisanat," to ferry them and their goods to Ouagadougou for the 2026 Salon international de l'artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO). The train, which was flagged off on October 28, 2026, in Bobo-Dioulasso, has over 300 available seats and can carry approximately 282 tonnes of goods. This initiative aims to alleviate the logistical and financial challenges faced by artisans when participating in the SIAO.
The "train de l'artisanat" is an exceptional arrangement by SITARAIL to support artisans from Bobo-Dioulasso, who often face significant challenges in attending the SIAO due to transportation and logistics costs. According to Alexis Ouédraogo, a representative of SITARAIL, the company has mobilized an entire train carriage for this initiative, marking an evolution in its support for artisans. Previously, SITARAIL only provided a collector to transport artisans' goods to Ouagadougou.
The launch of the "train de l'artisanat" was attended by Souleymane Nakanabo, Secretary General of the Guiriko region, who represented the governor. Nakanabo commended SITARAIL for its efforts to support the development of craftsmanship and the valorization of Burkinabé cultural heritage. He encouraged the artisans to make the most of this opportunity and to showcase their skills during the SIAO.
Artisans who will benefit from this initiative have expressed their gratitude to SITARAIL for alleviating their transportation challenges. Ali Prospère Traoré, promoter of the Pro Couture enterprise, noted that the free transportation will significantly reduce their expenses, allowing them to focus on showcasing and selling their products. Mariam Sawadogo, a seamstress and promoter of a sewing center, also welcomed the initiative, citing the difficulties they previously faced in transporting their goods and themselves to the SIAO.
The "train de l'artisanat" is part of SITARAIL's continued efforts to support cultural and tourism initiatives in Burkina Faso. Following the "train de la culture" and the "train du tourisme," SITARAIL is reinforcing its commitment to actors in the cultural economy. The company aims to contribute to a more accessible participation in the SIAO 2026 by facilitating the transportation of artisans and their goods.
The participation of artisans from the Guiriko region in the SIAO 2026 is expected to not only promote their creations but also to establish commercial contacts and explore new markets. SITARAIL's support is seen as a vital component in enabling artisans to overcome logistical challenges and focus on the commercial aspects of the event.
As the artisans from the Guiriko region embark on their journey to Ouagadougou, they are optimistic about the opportunities that the SIAO 2026 will bring. With SITARAIL's support, they can concentrate on showcasing their skills and products, potentially leading to successful business outcomes. The company's initiative is a testament to its dedication to supporting Burkinabé culture and economy.
