The mayor of Dialacoto commune, located in the Tambacounda department of Senegal, has launched an appeal to the government for urgent intervention to improve the town's road network and health infrastructure. Bafodé Drame made the plea during the final of the Mayor's Cup, highlighting the dire state of the commune's roads, particularly during the rainy season. Dialacoto, situated approximately 67 kilometers from the regional capital, comprises 63 villages with a population of nearly 25,000 inhabitants.

The commune's main concern is the deplorable state of two key roads: the 13-kilometer stretch from Diannakouta to Dialakoto, and the 60-kilometer stretch from Diénoundiala to Kaboudiarra. The mayor emphasized that these roads, crucial for the mobility of the population, are in a state of disrepair, with the Diannakouta-Dialakoto axis completely degraded, cutting off the population from the center during the rainy season. Furthermore, the Diénoundiala-Kaboudiarra axis has not been included in the government's programs.

Despite these challenges, the municipal team is attempting to find local solutions with available resources. The mayor cited ongoing projects, including the construction of a road connecting Madina Darsalam to Madina Soko, the development of secondary roads, and the creation of a parking lot for heavy-duty vehicles. These initiatives aim to improve access to agricultural production areas and provide alternative solutions to the commune's infrastructure woes.

The state of health infrastructure in Dialacoto is also a pressing concern. With only two health posts serving a population of 25,000, the mayor is advocating for the rapid construction of a third health post in the village of Mansadala. The lack of teachers and access to clean water are additional challenges facing the commune. To address these issues, the municipality has recruited six volunteer teachers to work in villages with makeshift classrooms.

The recruitment of volunteer teachers is part of the municipality's efforts to address educational disparities in the area. The commune is also seeking to improve access to clean water, a fundamental necessity for its inhabitants. The mayor's appeal to the government highlights the need for increased support to address the basic service needs of this large and border commune, home to the Niokolo-Koba national park.

The commune's development is hindered by its geographical location and limited resources. As a border commune, Dialacoto faces unique challenges in providing basic services to its population. The mayor's initiatives demonstrate the local government's commitment to finding solutions, but also underscore the need for government intervention to address the commune's infrastructure and service delivery gaps.

The situation in Dialacoto highlights the need for increased investment in rural infrastructure and services in Senegal. The government's response to the mayor's appeal will be crucial in determining the commune's development trajectory. For now, the people of Dialacoto remain hopeful that their concerns will be heard and addressed by the authorities.
