Nigerian security forces have successfully foiled a planned mass kidnapping in Gidan Iyado, Kakumi Ward, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State. The operation, which took place on Monday, was a collaborative effort between the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes. The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, disclosed that the operation was intelligence-driven and part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activities before they escalate. According to Mu’azu, security forces deployed operational assets and laid ambush for the bandits, engaging them in an encounter that resulted in the neutralisation of 18 members of the criminal group.
The security forces recovered several items from the bandits, including one G3 rifle, two AK-47 rifles, and 14 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Additionally, three motorcycles were recovered, which were likely used by the bandits to facilitate their operations. The recovered items suggest a significant level of planning and coordination by the bandits.
The bandits were also suspected to have rustled livestock, with security operatives recovering two cows and 94 sheep. This recovery underscores the link between banditry, kidnapping, and livestock theft in the area. The alleged leader of the group, Musa Duki, a former school headmaster turned bandit kingpin, is said to operate from Mununu Forest in Faskari Local Government Area.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda commended the security personnel for their gallantry and swift intervention, saying the operation prevented a mass abduction of residents. The governor's commendation highlights the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the government in addressing the security challenges in the region.
