Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, has called on residents to adopt waste sorting and proper sanitation practices. She made this appeal during the sixth edition of the state's monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of cleaner and sustainable sanitation practices at the grassroots level. Proper waste management is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment, she stressed.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the need for residents to sort waste, making evacuation easier and contributing to a cleaner environment. She noted that sanitation is not just about cleaning surroundings but also about ensuring healthy and sustainable communities and preventing the spread of communicable diseases. The governor's wife acknowledged the need for the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to improve its waste evacuation operations.
Sanwo-Olu commended residents of Oshodi-Isolo, particularly women and children, for actively participating in the monthly exercise. She was accompanied by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Deputy Governor, and other top government functionaries. The exercise aims to promote community involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Some residents of Olowora and Eweje streets reported that heaps of refuse had accumulated in their areas due to non-evacuation by LAWMA over the past six months. Mrs. Adeola Lawal, a resident of Olowora, urged the state government and waste management authorities to be proactive in evacuating refuse. Prolonged accumulation of waste poses serious health risks to residents.
Lawal called for regular monitoring of waste collection activities and prompt intervention whenever refuse begins to accumulate. Mr. Julius Moye, another resident, expressed concern over the prolonged presence of refuse in the area. Despite fulfilling their obligations by paying PSP waste collection bills, residents are facing challenges.
Residents appealed to the state government to strengthen waste evacuation operations in Olowora and Eweje. They also called for sustained environmental sanitation beyond the monthly exercise. Regular waste evacuation would complement residents' efforts to maintain clean and healthy surroundings.
The streets monitored by Sanwo-Olu and her entourage include Adisa Ajibulu, Eweje, Makinde, Abeokuta, and Olowora. Residents and government officials emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address waste management challenges and promote a healthier environment.
