Safaricom Plc has appointed Boniface Mungania as its Chief Financial Services Officer, effective November 1, following regulatory approval. Mungania will oversee the company's M-PESA and financial services business, reporting directly to the chief executive officer. With over 15 years of experience within Safaricom, Mungania has held various senior positions, including Senior Manager for M-PESA Business Development and Head of M-PESA Products and Services Development.
Mungania replaces Esther Waititu, who left the company in July after nearly three years in the position. Waititu's departure was part of a series of changes within Safaricom's leadership. Mungania joined Safaricom in 2007 as a customer care representative and has since progressed through the ranks, including roles such as Payments Tribe Lead and Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation.
The appointment is part of a broader series of leadership changes across Safaricom and its Ethiopian subsidiary. In August, Safaricom appointed Caroline Wambugu as Group Lead for Finance Controls, Performance and Investor Relations. Wambugu's expanded role includes financial controlling, reporting, tax, treasury, shared services and credit collections. She previously headed finance planning, analysis and investor relations.
Safaricom also welcomed two new non-executive directors to its board in August: Mariam Cassim and Matimba Mbungela, both from Vodacom Group. Cassim leads Vodacom's fintech business, while Mbungela serves as its chief human resources officer. They replaced outgoing directors James Ludlow and John Kipngetich Mosonik.
In Ethiopia, Safaricom Telecommunications PLC appointed Samuel Munyua as Chief Finance Officer, effective November 1. Munyua previously served as Safaricom Group Financial Controller, having joined the Kenyan operation in 2021. With over 20 years of finance experience, Munyua brings expertise from previous roles at KCB Bank and Barclays Bank Kenya.
These appointments occur as Safaricom continues to develop its financial services operations across East Africa. M-PESA remains a central part of its business, with the company expanding its offerings in the region. The leadership changes aim to support Safaricom's growth and development in the financial services sector.
The appointments reflect Safaricom's commitment to strengthening its leadership team and driving growth in its financial services business. With Mungania at the helm of its financial services, Safaricom is poised to continue innovating and expanding its offerings in East Africa.
