Nigerian lawmaker Benedict Etanabene, representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency, has criticized President Bola Tinubu's democratic credentials. Etanabene, a lawyer and former Labour activist, expressed concerns over the growing intolerance of opposition by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 general elections approach. He made these remarks in an interview with Tell Magazine, scrutinizing Tinubu's acclaimed democratic credentials.

Etanabene cited Tinubu's past actions, including his resistance to President Goodluck Jonathan's attempt to remove fuel subsidy in 2012. Tinubu had mobilized opposition to the move, citing potential suffering and hardship. However, when Tinubu came into power, he removed the subsidy without consultation, suppressing dissenting voices. Etanabene questioned Tinubu's consistency, stating that his actions did not reflect his claimed democratic credentials.

The lawmaker also referenced Tinubu's handling of the political crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara was at odds with Minister Nyesom Wike. Etanabene accused Tinubu of interfering and using federal government powers to "crush" Rivers State and its governor. He drew parallels with former President Olusegun Obasanjo's actions against him when he was governor of Lagos.

Etanabene's comments come amid concerns over the intimidation, threats, harassment, and killing of opposition party members. He noted that the outcome of Tinubu's leadership style would be evident in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. The lawmaker emphasized that Tinubu's actions, rather than his words, would determine his democratic credentials.

The lawmaker also weighed in on the recent attack on Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in Kogi State. Obi was prevented from entering the state by suspected political thugs. Etanabene defended Obi's decision to turn back, citing the risk of violence and potential harm to himself and others.

Etanabene praised Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for prioritizing citizens' safety over his presidency, stating that no citizen's blood was worth the cost of a presidency. He echoed similar sentiments, expressing concern over the potential consequences of election manipulations and violence.

Etanabene concluded that Tinubu's actions did not align with his claimed democratic credentials, labeling him a "pretentious democrat." The lawmaker's comments have sparked debate over Tinubu's leadership style and the state of Nigeria's democracy.
