The Chinese community in Lagos has made a significant donation to support the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Abuja, Nigeria. On October 7, 2026, the community donated eight laptops to the Federal Ministry of Education as part of activities marking this year’s celebration. The theme of the celebration is “Standing with Teachers.” This donation reaffirms the Chinese community’s commitment to the development of Nigeria’s education sector.

The donation was made in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education. Zhou Jun, President of the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria, emphasized that education is central to the Chinese community’s engagement with Nigeria. According to her, a nation’s growth is not solely dependent on buildings or wealth, but on the people who shape minds and character, which is the work of teachers.

The Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria worked alongside the Chinese Consulate General in Lagos, the Huaxing Arts Troupe Nigeria, and the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association to support various humanitarian and educational initiatives in the country. Some of the community’s interventions include renovating schools to provide safer learning environments for students and teachers.

The Chinese community has also awarded scholarships to more than 9,000 students across Nigeria. Additionally, their charity programme, “Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light,” has restored the sight of over 900 people living with cataracts through surgeries. This programme demonstrates the community’s commitment to giving back to the Nigerian society.

The Chinese community has also provided food and household supplies to low-income families under its “Together Fight Against Hunger” charity programme. Zhou Jun stated that a hungry child cannot learn well, and a struggling community cannot grow. The community’s efforts aim to address some of the challenges faced by students and teachers in Nigeria.

Zhao Ming, a member of the Chinese community, described teachers as the backbone of society due to their role in transmitting knowledge and values to younger generations. He emphasized that the contribution of teachers to national development makes it necessary for individuals, communities, and organisations to provide them with the support and tools required to perform their duties effectively.

The donation of laptops to teachers is a practical gesture of support for educators and the Nigerian education system. According to Zhao Ming, the initiative is intended to honour teachers while contributing to the growth of the education sector. This donation forms part of broader efforts by the Chinese community to strengthen people-to-people ties between Nigeria and China.
