Nigerian political analysts have called on political parties to promote issue-based campaigns and shun inflammatory statements, hate speech, and provocative conduct ahead of the country's elections. Dr. Samson Olajide, a Political Analyst, made the call while speaking on a current affairs programme on Kapital FM, Abuja. He stressed the need for political parties and their supporters to focus on policy proposals, campaign promises, and practical solutions to the country's socio-economic and security challenges.

Dr. Olajide noted that political campaigns should provide an opportunity for candidates to communicate their vision, present workable policy alternatives, and demonstrate their capacity to address the concerns of Nigerians. He emphasised that this approach would help to promote peaceful elections and strengthen Nigeria's democratic process. By focusing on policy proposals, political parties can engage in constructive debates and discussions, rather than personal attacks and divisive rhetoric.

Mr. Tonye Akiga, a Public Affairs, Governance, and Strategic Communications Analyst, also urged political parties to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters. He emphasised the need for sustained voter education and sensitisation campaigns on the dangers and consequences of electoral violence. Mr. Akiga stressed that such acts could undermine the credibility of elections, threaten lives and property, and destabilise the country.

The analysts also called for stronger collaboration among the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security agencies, political parties, and other relevant stakeholders to identify potential threats, prevent electoral violence, and ensure a safe and credible electoral process. This, they noted, would help to build trust and confidence in the electoral process and promote peaceful elections.

Contributors who called into the programme urged political supporters, particularly young people, to reject political manipulation, violence, and acts capable of disrupting public peace. They encouraged youths to participate constructively in the political process through informed engagement, peaceful campaigns, and responsible civic participation. This, they noted, would help to promote a democratic culture anchored on tolerance, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

The programme highlighted the importance of collective responsibility among political actors, electoral institutions, and citizens in building a democratic culture. It emphasised that political parties and their supporters must work together to promote peaceful elections and strengthen Nigeria's democratic process. By doing so, they can help to ensure that the country's elections are free, fair, and credible.

The call for issue-based campaigns and peaceful elections is a timely reminder of the importance of promoting democratic values and principles in Nigeria. The country's political actors must work together to promote a culture of tolerance, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. By doing so, they can help to build a stable and democratic society that benefits all Nigerians.
