A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along the Mtwara–Lindi road in Tanzania, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuring six others. The accident involved a semi-trailer lorry belonging to GHW (T) Ltd, driven by 32-year-old Ibrahim Joseph. According to Mtwara Regional Police Commander Issa Suleimani, the driver allegedly encroached on the opposite side of the road without taking precautions, colliding with an auto-rickshaw.

The auto-rickshaw, driven by 32-year-old Jamswai Nanyanga, was traveling from Mkanaledi Main Bus Stand towards the ferry with five passengers when the accident occurred. A motorcycle carrying two passengers was following behind and crashed into the auto-rickshaw, resulting in the deaths and injuries. The deceased have been identified as Amina Chinakufaa, 42, of Chinolela; Fatuma Bohora, 56, of Luhokwe; and Somoe Hassan, 40, of Madangwa, all residents of Lindi Region.

The six injured individuals include motorcycle taxi rider Sharifu Mambo, 36; Rukia Lipongo, 34; Hajra Mohamed, 26; Esha Lipondo, 37; Amina Kilimile, 39; and the auto-rickshaw driver Jamswai Nanyanga, 32. They were receiving treatment at the Southern Zone Referral Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary at Mtwara Regional Referral Hospital.

Police arrested the lorry driver, Ibrahim Joseph, and are conducting a thorough investigation into the accident. According to RPC Suleimani, the suspect will be taken before the relevant legal authorities once the necessary procedures have been completed. The police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver had been drinking alcohol before the accident. A resident of Magomeni Street, Hassan Chipatu, alleged that the driver had been drinking throughout the night and urged the government to take stronger measures against motorists who violate road safety regulations.

Another resident, Aziz Juma, claimed to have witnessed some Good Samaritans warning the driver against proceeding because he appeared to be drunk. The driver allegedly ignored their warnings and later hit a car parked nearby before the fatal accident occurred. The government has been urged to maintain the system of deducting penalty points from drivers who breach traffic rules.

The incident has raised concerns about road safety in the region, with residents calling for stricter measures to prevent such accidents in the future. The police investigation is ongoing, and the driver is expected to face legal action once the procedures are completed.
