A wedding day that began with excitement in Nambaya Village, Masasi, ended in grief when 37-year-old Floviana Hokororo died just hours after exchanging vows with her groom, Patrick Daniel Almasi. The couple had been planning their wedding at St. Clemence Catholic Church when Floviana suddenly fell ill before the ceremony could begin. Rather than postpone, Patrick made a decision that reflected both his love and desperation: he asked the priest, witnesses, and guests to complete the marriage rite in the bedroom.
Floviana and Patrick had been looking forward to their special day, and the bride had spent the morning preparing with her friend Salome Yohana Said. The two had showered together, dressed, chatted with makeup artists, and admired how beautiful Floviana looked. Floviana had even joked about forgetting the price of her shoes because they had bought so many things. However, things took a turn for the worse when Floviana's condition suddenly deteriorated.
Patrick insisted that the wedding proceed in the bedroom, saying the law permitted it. He described his decision as a reflection of his love and commitment to Floviana. "I told my wife that I loved her very much and that I was genuinely committed to marrying her," Patrick said afterwards. "Since our goal was to get married, I asked her, 'Why don't we get married right here where we are?' I suggested we get married on the bed because the law allows us to conduct a marriage ceremony there."
Father Ignas Mlelwa, who officiated the ceremony, said he had arrived at around 3 o'clock and waited as the situation became increasingly difficult. Before proceeding, he ensured Floviana had confessed her sins. "I knew her history and her spiritual journey, and I did not want to fail to save her soul at the final moment," he said during her funeral service. This was a difficult decision for everyone involved.
Floviana was rushed to Nambaya Dispensary, where nurse Sister Devota Maluma fought to stabilise her. The nurse revealed that Floviana appeared to be about one month pregnant and had lost a significant amount of blood. Despite receiving fluids and blood transfusions, Floviana's condition continued to deteriorate. She passed away approximately four hours after the wedding ceremony concluded.
The news of Floviana's death sent shockwaves through the village, and the wedding celebrations dissolved into funeral preparations. Family member Ana Richard Masugur spoke about the loss, saying Floviana was very close to her, almost like her own daughter. "I never expected to lose her in such a sudden and tragic way," Masugur said. The community is still reeling from the shock of Floviana's death.
The incident has left many questions unanswered, and the community is still trying to come to terms with what happened. Floviana's friend Salome recalled their last conversation, saying Floviana had seemed normal until she suddenly changed. "We kept telling her how beautiful she looked," Salome recalled. "Then suddenly my colleague changed. That was the last time I heard her voice."
