The Osun State Amotekun Corps has clarified that it handed over four of its operatives to the state Police Command to assist in the investigation into the recent murder of Olalekan Oyeyemi, also known as 'Emir', at a motor park in Ile-Ife. This clarification was made necessary due to a report circulated on social media claiming that the police had arrested some of its operatives in connection with Oyeyemi's death.

According to the Amotekun Corps, the operatives handed over to the police were attached to the Osun factional Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Nurudeen Alowonle. The corps' spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, signed the statement, emphasizing that the operatives were made available to the police as part of the investigative process.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had ordered an investigation into the killing of Oyeyemi, a chieftain of the Accord Party, who died during a clash at Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife on Sunday, September 13. Oyeyemi was reportedly preparing for an appointment as chairman of the Park Management System, a body that the state government planned to establish to replace the NURTW in the management of public motor parks.

The Amotekun Corps emphasized that the police did not arrest the operatives, but rather, the Corps Commander, High Chief Dr Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, personally handed them over to the Osun State Police Command in the interest of transparency and accountability. This decision was made to enable the police to conduct their investigation and unravel the circumstances surrounding the attacks in Ile-Ife.

The corps expressed its commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and cooperation with other security agencies, noting that it would not condone indiscipline or any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the security architecture of the state. The Amotekun Corps urged the public and media practitioners to distinguish between being arrested and being voluntarily handed over for investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the four operatives should not be misrepresented or sensationalized before the conclusion of the police investigation, according to the Amotekun Corps. The corps is dedicated to working with other security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into Oyeyemi's murder and to bring perpetrators to justice.

The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in Osun State, particularly in Ile-Ife, where the murder took place. The state government and security agencies have been urged to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
