The Delta State Police Command confirmed that one person died and five others were injured during a violent incident at a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The rally, which took place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, was marred by violence involving supporters of different political parties.

According to the police, they had received intelligence reports suggesting a likelihood of violence before the rally and had invited the organisers to a security meeting. The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, stated that the organisers were briefed on identified security threats and advised against holding an open road procession. Instead, they were encouraged to conduct their political activities at a designated venue with adequate security arrangements.

Despite the police advice, the organisers allegedly ignored it and proceeded with the road procession, leading to a violent incident along Nnebisi Road, Asaba. The incident resulted in the death of a victim whose identity had not been ascertained. The police responded quickly to a distress call, mobilising officers to the scene, taking the injured victims to the hospital, and reinforcing security in the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale, condemned the violence and reiterated that political parties were free to conduct lawful campaigns and other political activities. However, he advised political parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety and to liaise with the police ahead of political gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.

The police have launched an investigation into the violent incident and assured residents of a thorough and impartial probe. CP Samuel Erale urged anyone with useful information to contact the command. The incident highlights the rising tensions and violence during political campaigns in Nigeria, with various groups and parties vying for power.

The OK Movement has demanded a probe into the violence, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. The incident has sparked concerns about the security situation in Delta State and the need for political parties to ensure their activities are conducted peacefully.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political parties have been urged to exercise caution and ensure their campaigns are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that political activities are conducted within the bounds of the law.
